Evaluation of periodontal treatment efficiency by clinical and biochemical methods on chronic periodontitis patients with and without acute myocard infarction

Periodontal disease is a multifactorial infectious disease,has been linked to cardiovascular disease. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of periodontal treatment on GCF levels of Neopterin and sVCAM-1 in CP patients with AMI in comparison to systematically healthy CP patients we also aimed to assess the potential correlation between CP and risk for developing AMI. To our knowledge, our study is the first report evaluating the effects of periodontal treatment in AMI+CP patients.140 AMI patients were initially recruited. from individuals referred to the Department of Cardiology 60 AMI patients were volunteers for periodontal examination during 1 or 2 days after admission to coronary care unit. 53 patients diagnosed as CP. Of these 53 CP patients with AMI 20 patients enrolled in periodontal treatment. Finally 20 AMI+CP patients, 20 systematically healthy CP patients and 20 healthy individuals were included.At pretreatment time point, there were no significant differences between CP and CP+AMİ for plaque index, gingival index, GCF levels of Neopterin and sVCAM-1 and these parameters were higher in both of two groups than healthy controls. AMİ+CP group showed statistically significant increases in number of teeth with 5mm ?CAL<7mm and CAL?7mm.At post-treatment time point, there were no significant differences between CP and CP+AMI for PI, CAL or GCF volumes but AMI group showed statistically significant decreases in number of teeth with 5mm?CAL<7mm and CAL?7mm. Within each group, all clinical parameters and GCF Neopterin and sVCAM-1 levels showed statistically significant reductions at post-treatment time point.
