Abstract (EN)

II SUMMARY MS Thesis PLANNING AND DETERMINING RURAL POTENTIAL IN THE VILLAGES OF ALAÇATI (ÇEŞME-İZMİR) SUBDISTRICT. Fulya KERM AN The University of Fırat The Institute of Social Sciences The Department of Geography This thesis investigates the land-use with the contribution of agriculture to a local economy in terms of income. Thus it attempts to make a contribution to one of the aspects of agriculture by providing knowledge for policy-making. It looks at land-use and agriculture from a different, but rather important perspective. Analyses were made at one of the popular coastal destinations of the Turkish Aegean namely Alaçatı (Çeşme-îzmir), for the summer of 2002-2003. The aim at this analysis was to place agriculture in it's local setting. Secondly, planning studies and investment decisions were involved in order to provide a perspective for present and future development of the sector and stress policies encouraging agriculture. It is hoped that results will provide necessary inputs for policy making, planning and management of agricultural development in Çeşme as well as providing an insight to similar coastal destinations. Geographic area including the SA as well as the Karaburun Peninsula, Urla and Seferihisar is called as the "Çeşme Peninsula".The area studied is one of the tourist destinations of the Western Aegean. The S A consists of two municipalities (Çeşme and Alaçatı). Main settlements in the SA are Ildin, Germiyan and KarakÖy villages. In the SA., agricultural or arable land is getting decreased due to infrastructure facilities, tourism and highway construction. In addition to this, the cultural fishing plants established along the costal areas are being developed.
