Foreign Ministry of Aleksandr Karatodori Pasha and Ottoman foreign policy

This thesis examines the foreign policy of the Ottoman Empire during the Foreign Affairs of Aleksandr Karatodori Pasha in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The study is handled with the claim that the realist theory coincides with the the balance of power theory. The European States System was rebuilt for the purpose of stability with the Vienna Congress held in 1815. The aim is not to allow the destruction caused by Napoleon in Europe. The geostrategic position of the Ottoman State is extremely important for the maintenance of this status quo. In the study, interactions with a holistic perspective are carried out since the Ottoman Empire and the European States experienced intense diplomatic, military and political relations in the 19th century. The years 1878-1879, when Aleksandr Karatodori was the Foreign Minister, determines the scope of the study. In the thesis, using the primary and secondary sources, the power balance paradigm of the realist theory is associated with the place of the Ottoman State in the international system with the place of Aleksandr Karatodori Pasha in the bureaucracy. In this study, the policies of the Ottoman State towards non-Muslims (nation system-Ottomanism), which are the result of Aleksandr Karatodori's being a Greek Ottoman statesman, are included. Howevwe, the diplomacy and foreign policy relations of the Abdulhamid period were discussed.
