Abstract (EN)
Alexis de Tocqueville, a thinker who lived between 1805 and 1856, examined the effects of religion on democracy and society in his work, "Democracy in America," and revealed the relationship between these two concepts. Tocqueville wrote this work after his visit to America. Based on his observations in America, Tocqueville argued that religion strengthens individual morality, reinforces social solidarity, and contributes to the healthy functioning of democracy. However, he also underlined that religion, if it becomes overly dogmatic or political, can harm democracy. The aim of our study is to understand and analyze the effects of religion on society and politics by relating the thoughts and observations of Alexis de Tocqueville to religion. In this study, which employs the literature review method, a comparative analysis approach was adopted to examine the relationship between democracy and religion in the contexts of America and France. The relationship between the concepts of religion and democracy, as well as how the concept of civil religion and democratic processes affect these two phenomena, were examined. It was seen with this study, prepared based on Tocqueville's work, that religion plays an important role in democratic societies. It has been stated that a better understanding of the relationship between religion and democracy can contribute to the strengthening of democratic societies.
