Abstract (EN)

This dissertation is a comparative study in which ?Berlin Alexanderplatz? and ?Die beiden Freundinnen und ihr Giftmord? have been compared. The aim of this study is to expose the relations of the characters with violence. The worldwide famous writer Alfred Döblin, experienced both his father?s leaving home and violence towards the Jewish people throughout the Second World War.Authors, especially Jewish authors like Döblin, choose their subjects from actual events. Incidents such as war, genocide, violence and death have always been a material for the works of the writers. Alfred Döblin who had to live the Second World War and worked as a doctor in this war chooses his subjects and characters from his own life. Döblin looks at his characters not only from an author?s and poet?s perspective but also from a psychiatrist?s perspective.Alfred Döblin examines the notion of `violence? in different aspects in his two works; in ?Berlin Alexanderplatz? he criticizes city life and explains the chaos in Berlin in both positive and negative sides. On the other hand the characters? friendship and relationships with each other have been indicated. The relationships called friendship in these works play an important role.In ?Die beiden Freundinnen und ihr Giftmord? violence appears in family. In this work life of a couple is displayed through documents. Döblin wrote this work depending on a criminal incident which he read on a Berlin newspaper in 1924. The article was about a woman who killed her husband with rat poison after being subjected to severe `violence? by him. This highly discussed lawsuit aroused Döblin?s interest and he used this lawsuit as a material in his workWriter and psychiatrist Alfred Döblin examines the notion of violence in different aspects in his two works. By these works Döblin shows that violence may occur in different environments and may have several affects on different people.
