Investigation of bladder capacity in obese children with lower ürinary tract symptom and the effect of standard ürotherapy on the bladder capacity and quality of life

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate functional bladder capacity in obese children with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and the effect of standard urotherapy on bladder capacity and quality of life. Material and Method: The semi-experimental type study was carried out between July 2017 and February 2018 at Manisa Celal Bayar University Pediatric Surgery outpatient department. The sample of the study consisted of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms between the ages of 6 and 18 who were admitted to the outpatient clinic and were divided into groups according to BMI; 24 obese (BMI ≥ 95 percentile) and 27 normal overweight (5 < BMI < 85 percentile) children. Child Presentation Form, Voiding Symptom Score, Void-Volume Chart (2 days), KINDL and PIN-Q (TR) were used as data collection tools. The results were evaluated by applying questionnaires to all children before standard urotherapy and one month after standard urotherapy. Results: In terms of functional bladder capacities of obese and normal weight children with LUTS, there was no statistically significant difference.One month of standard urotherapy applied to children with LUTS increased the functional bladder capacity and quality of life statistically significantly, while voiding symptom score decreased statistically significantly. % 20.8 of obese children with LUTS after standard urotherapy and % 14.8 of normal weight children with LUTS had partial response. Conclusion:We state that obesity in children with LUTS has no effect on functional bladder capacity.standard urotherapy is an effective treatment of symptoms, quality of life and bladder capacity.
