Investigation of pre and post-welding mechanical and ballistic properties ofAl alloys (5083-7039) (M. Sc. Thesis) Mehmet ERDEM GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY May 2001 ABSTRACT In Al processing alloys, pre-and post-welding standard mechanical, microstructural and ballistic resistance values of Al-Mg 5083 and Al-Zn 7039 alloys were compared. 12,7 mm aluminium sheets of both groups were welded with MIG weld technique and tensile, bending and Vickers hardness test were conducted on samples. Micro structural photographs of ITAB were taken and mechanical values of pre- and post welded samples were compared. A ballistic experiment was carried out on the saple of 38 mm- thick 7039 alloy by opening ballistics groove weld using MIG welding technique. Ballistics experiments were conducted on base material, heat affected zone and weld metal with 8 shots, 21 shots and 6 shots respectively. V50 speed limits of these areas were found and V50 speed limit specified in its standard was compared to those of the main metal found by us.
