Abstract (EN)

Alzheimer's is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease that is becoming increasingly common worldwide and has no effective treatment yet. It is predicted that Alzheimer's disease, which generally occurs with advancing age, will lead to heavier burdens on social and economic resources with the increase in the elderly population. Therefore, it is significant to prevent the disease or to find an effective treatment. Early diagnosis of the disease is as important as its treatment, but biomarkers that can be used in early diagnosis are almost not available. The cerebrospinal fluid used in the diagnosis of the disease is not at a sufficient level and it is very difficult to take it. Hence, blood biomarkers that are less costly, less invasive, easily accessible and can be used in long-term studies will be a better alternative. The potential of the changes in homocysteine, folate, CRP and uric acid levels, which were included in our study, to be used as a biomarker in Alzheimer's disease is not yet known. Moreover, in the literature there is no study investigating the relationship between Alzheimer's disease and MAPT gene mutation (P301L). In the present study, which included 101 Alzheimer's patients and 101 healthy individuals, changes in homocysteine, folate, CRP, uric acid levels and the relationship between MAPT gene mutation (P301L) and Alzheimer's disease were investigated. There was no significant difference between the patient and control groups in terms of homocysteine (p=0,771), folate (p=0,366), CRP (p=0,759) and uric acid (p=0,860). Genotypes were compared in terms of MAPT gene mutation (P301L) between the patient and control groups, and no statistically significant difference was found (p=0.081). On the other hand, there was a statistically significant difference in terms of age between the patient and control groups (p=0.006). It requires increasing the sample size and new studies in different ethnic groups in order to further investigate the relationship between Alzheimer's disease and MAPT gene mutation and some biochemical markers more comprehensively.
