An examination of the effect of preoperative pain education on postoperative pain

This study was carried out as a case control study to investigate the effect of preoperative pain training on postoperative pain in patients scheduled for gynecological surgery. The research was conducted between a gynecology and obstetrics clinic of a health research center. The sample consisted of 70 women, 35 of whom were control group and 35 of whom were scheduled for gynecological surgery. Patient Information Form, Pain Follow-up Form and Brief Pain Inventory were administered to the patients in the case and control groups to collect data. Verbal pain education was given to the patients in the case group in the preoperative period. The pain level of the patient and control group was evaluated in the first 24 hours postoperatively. In the evaluation of the data descriptive statistics of categorical variables were given with frequency and percentage, continuous variables with mean and standard deviation. There was no statistically significant difference (p> 0.05) in terms of descriptive characteristics and health characteristics of the patients in the case and control groups, and the groups were homogeneous. Postoperative pain severity was statistically significant in the patient group who received preoperative pain training (p <0.005). In the postoperative 24-hour period, it was determined that the mean scores of the mildest, worst, mean, and interview-time pain were statistically significant in the patient group and postoperative pain of the patients in this group less prevented the activities of daily living. As aresult of this study, preoperative pain education was found to be effective in reducing the pain level in the postoperative period.
