Expectatıons of the patıents from the nurses about paın control after surgery and ınterventıons of the nurses for patıents ın paın

The present research was descriptively conducted in order to determine the expectations of the patients from nurses about pain control and the interventions of the nurses for the patients in pain. All patients stayed at the General Surgery Clinic, Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic, Thoracic Surgery Clinic, Urology Clinic, Neurosurgery Clinic and Orthopedic Clinic of Gazi University Health Application and Research Center. The sample of the research was made up by 325 patients and 63 nurses who worked at the surgery clinics. The data collected using the questionnaires designed by the researcher were evaluated through frequency, mean and standard deviation.It was found out that mean age of the patients was 52.23, 55.6 % was male, 56.2 % had primary school degree or below, 42.5 % was housewives and 62.9 % had a prior surgery experience. Major pain control expectations of the patients were that nurses should take their pain into consideration and pay attention to their pain (100 %) and nurses should watch for the decrease in pain (100 %). It was found out that mean age of the participant nurses was 29.38, 27.0 % worked for 1-5 years and most of them (79.4 %) had bachelor?s degree.Most of the nurses administered pharmacologic methods as instructed by the doctors and gave a suitable position to decrease pain. These were followed by observation of the side effects of the pharmacologic methods (90.5 %), re-controlling of the pain (90.5 %), hot / cold compression when needed (76.4 %), exercises such as arm exercises-leg exercises-walking (71.4 %), relaxation exercises (60.3 %) and massage (22.2 %).The reasons for which nurses performed non pharmacological methods less were insufficient number of nurses, patients? reluctance to the practices used for pain control, lack of time and lack of knowledge for pain control.KEY WORDS: Pain After Surgery, Pain Control After Surgery, Expectations Of The Patients, Nursing Interventions
