Evalution of the relationship between anesthetist and surgeon in the operating room

EVALUATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ANESTHESİOLOGIST AND SURGEON IN THE OPERATING ROOM Two members of the operating team in the operating room, anesthesiologists and the surgeons are the most important groups. The conflict between these two groups can affect safe of the patients. In this study, we aimed to resource reasons of the conflict between anesthesiologists and surgeons. A cross-sectional study of 192 anesthesiologists and 211 surgeons at 11 Hospitals in Turkey, was conducted between May and July 2014. It is a self-reported questionnaire with 41 items. The questions were prepared to reveal the relation between the anesthesiologist and the surgeons, possible reasons of conflicts between them, and demografic data. Anesthetists were accepted as Group 1, and all other branches of surgery were classified as Group 2. Forty two percent of anesthesiologists and seventeen percent of surgeons answered the questions of relation as unfavourable (p =0.000). When asked the reason of possible conflict, the findings were overwork, high risk patients, insufficient communication between staff, inadequate preoperatif assessment, lack of appreciation, social interaction outside work, lack of communication ability, patient unawareness about surgery and anesthetics rivals for stalking patients claim, patients, bad timing, insufsicient communication during surgery, unnecessary consultations, performance-based wage system, fear of ligitation, comorbidities be disregard (p<0.05). Staff shortage, the emergency operations in both groups showed a high rate of conflict as a cause of. In conclusion, we determined conflict causes between surgeons and anesthesiologist in the operating room.
