Abstract (EN)
This study aimed to evaluate the experiences and perceptions of operating room nurses regarding the use of the "Retained Surgical Item Risk Assessment Scale", developed to prevent retained surgical items in the operating room. A qualitative research design was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 nurses working in the operating room of a university hospital. Data were analyzed through content analysis, and five main themes emerged: (1) Perceived risk and experiences related to retained surgical items, (2) Contribution of the scale to patient safety and clinical practice, (3) Nurses' views on the content and items of the scale, (4) Practical challenges and organizational factors, and (5) Suggestions for improving and integrating the scale. Findings indicated that nurses considered retained surgical items a preventable yet high-risk patient safety issue and found the scale effective in promoting awareness and standardization. However, they emphasized the need for branch-specific adaptations, clearer item definitions, and simplified language. Additionally, workload, role overlap, and time pressure during emergency surgeries were identified as barriers to consistent scale use. In conclusion, the scale is applicable in clinical practice, but its effective and sustainable implementation requires enhanced training, digital integration, and organizational support.
