Labor force analysis immigrants to the united states from Turkey: New jersey Paterson area survey

The purpose of this study is to identify the position of and problems encountered in the labor market by the Turkish immigrants, who had emigrated from Turkey to the USA within the historical process. The study involves 142 Turkish immigrants living in the Paterson District of USA's State of New Jersey, who were interviewed online or face to face. The quantitative research method was used in the study. Through this method, labor force parameters and demographic parameters that are suitable for the region's structure were identified for the purpose of determining the role and problems of Turks in the US labor market. Data was collected through the original interview method prepared in the light of these parameters, and the data thus obtained was analyzed using the SPSS version 24 software. The analysis revealed that most of those who had emigrated from Turkey to the USA are from Turkey's Marmara and Central Anatolia regions, and are mostly consisted of the middle-age group. It was determined that most of those arriving in the country are high school and university graduates, and had immigrated for economic reasons. Another finding was that Turks are generally employed in low-skilled labor in the region, such as being a cook, sales personnel, engineer, carpenter, and waiter. The network of interrelations between the Turks who are immigrants in the region to which they had immigrated in the USA was found to be weak. The study also revealed that the Turks are inclined to return to Turkey in the future. From a labor market point of view, it was observed that those participating in the study benefit from social security benefits, while their trade union activities were found to be at a very low level. It was found out that unemployment concerns are at medium level in the region inhabited by the Turks, that most of them work 45 hours or more, and that they are respected in the society in any way due to their jobs. The analysis further determined that the Turks are paid wages that are generally equal to that of other immigrants, while these wages are lower compared to those of US citizens. The research has further shown that the jobs occupied by the Turks are incompatible with their education. However, it was also found out as a result of the analysis that Turks suffer from discrimination during job-seeking, that employers do not offer equal opportunities to them, and that US employment agencies are not sufficiently helpful during their job-seeking.
