American Board's inventory study on architectural structures in Anatolia

Since its establishment, the American Board has spread over a very wide area in the world. This organization, which was also active in the Ottoman Empire after 1820, has built many institutions and structures affiliated to these institutions in line with its purposes in the places it included in its areas of activity, primarily education and health. In some stations in the mission regions, single structures were encountered while in some stations more than one structure was encountered within a campus area. The aim of the study is to present an inventory of the settlement areas in Anatolia created by the American Board and the structures identified in the context of education, culture and health functions. In line with this purpose, the settlements in the Western, Eastern and Central Turkey Missions within the borders of Anatolia, and the structures identified on and outside the campus in the context of functions determined in the same mission regions were discussed within the scope of the study. Within the scope of the study, campus areas; sketches of the campuses with different dates, the number of buildings on these sketches, the campus-topography relationship, the functions on the campus were analyzed, the locational relationship of the campuses with Protestant churches and city centers and their self-sufficiency status were examined. The structures within the scope of the study are; The date of purchase/construction, location within the city and/or campus, changes in the structures throughout the historical process, structure and size information, the status of the structures that have survived to the present day, and the current function information of the structures that have survived have been determined and compiled. The structures were separated based on their mission regions and a general evaluation of the structures created by the American Board in Anatolia was made, and the similarities of these structures in Anatolia with the structures in America and with the structures in local architecture were revealed.
