Abstract (EN)

An oath is a binding declaration made by invoking the name of Allah, either to affirm a statement or to commit to a future action. In Islam, oaths hold significant theological and legal importance. Accordingly, both the Qur'an and the Hadiths of the Prophet contain numerous rulings and explanations on this subject. Hadiths, in particular, serve as primary sources for Muslims concerning the definition, types, conditions of validity, and consequences of breaking oaths. This study examines hadiths on the topic of oaths found in the major hadith collections known as the Kutub al-Sittah. Relevant narrations were identified and analyzed in terms of their text, chains of transmission (isnād), and authenticity. Hadiths selected for inclusion in the thesis were further reviewed for variants and corroborating reports (shawāhid), and schematic isnād diagrams were prepared. Biographical information on the narrators was provided, and each hadith was evaluated using the principles of hadith criticism to determine its level of authenticity. The study is divided into two main sections. The first outlines the conceptual framework of hadith and oaths. The second classifies and analyzes the hadiths related to oaths within the Kutub al-Sittah. Each hadith is presented with its Arabic text, an English translation, source references (takhrīj), and a schematic chain of transmission. Narrators are assessed in terms of reliability (ṣiḥḥah). This research aims to contribute to theme-based studies in hadith literature and offer a more comprehensive understanding of oaths, a significant issue in Islamic jurisprudence.
