Anatolian Selçuklu wall coverings geometric patterns examined and used in tile industry and current reviews

Ceramic tiles have been used on the interior and exterior surfaces of the 13th century architectural structures of the Anatolian Seljuk Period for centuries, and they have increased the value of this cultural heritage with their rich pattern features as well as the extraordinary use of patterns in compositions. Anatolian Seljuks' unique understanding of technique and pattern constitute the characteristic feature of the period. Especially the most striking applications of geometric patterns are seen in the decoration of the architectural structures belonging to the Anatolian Seljuks. Geometric patterns, one of the most widely used design elements in wall covering decorations of this period, are very rich in design, technique and diversity. In addition to stone and brick, tiles were used as decorative elements as wall covering material of Anatolian Seljuk buildings. These tiles; in addition to floral, animal and various patterns, it has brought high-level aesthetic and visual richness to the buildings, especially with geometric pattern decoration applications. With the industrial revolution of the 18th century and the development of technology, the emergence of mass production led to the emergence of the ceramic industry and the design requirement. The décor applications, which started with silk screen printing on tiles used as floor and wall, continued with roto printing method, and in the developing process, it was replaced by the latest technology, inkjet digital decor. This research covers the data obtained with the geometric decoration applications applied in An atolian Seljuk wall coverings and the decoration technologies used in today's ceramic tile (coating) industry. Within the scope of this study, by selecting geometric patterns in Anatolian Seljuk wall coverings, the methods of pattern transfer in the past and present and the drawing methods of geometric motifs were examined, and new designs were made in order to combine this cultural heritage with modern designs through existing patterns. Thus, today's tile decor technology was combined with the Seljuk Geometry, our traditional heritage, emphasizing the continuity of the tradition. Believing that this study will bring different perspectives; it is expected to contribute to the field for young designer candidates, as well as bringing the traces of the 13th century that left its mark on Anatolian lands to today's contemporary spaces.
