The journey of individuation in the novels of John Fowles' The Collector and Kobo Abe's The Woman in the Dunes within the framework of analytical psychology

In Jungian psychology the psyche consists of conscious and unconscious which are opposite and complementing each other. While conscious and personal unconscious arise from the individual life, the collective unconscious is the product of all humanity and is transmitted from generation to generation. Individual who reaches unconscious faces aspects that are hidden underneath and by confronting with them growth in the individual can be observed. The main purpose of this study is to examine the individuation journey of the protagonists in John Fowles' The Collector and Kobo Abe's The Woman in the Dunes within the framework of Jung's archetypes and determine the degree of success or failure experienced by the characters in their journey to wholeness. It is difficult for the individual to achieve self discovery while trapped by the modern city that provokes loneliness, alienation and worthlessness. To overcome this situation one needs to achieve to a higher consciousness level. The involuntary departure from the city by the characters of Fowles and Abe made them get into their unconsciousness and led them question themselves. The characters who cannot find a space for expression in the modern city were able to stay alone with themselves under captivity and thus were able to make progress on the path of individuation.
