This study is about the power of the media and the actors who possess the media. In this project newspapers have been chosen as study material. Newspaper articles about a specific political issue are examined. The process of research is criticised by the theory and the method of Van Dijk who offers ?critical discourse analysis?. The media which seems like the fourth power of government, forms and directs the awareness of the society to impose their own ideologies.In the theoretical part of the thesis, the way media is used is explained by the critical media theories; the definitions of ideology; the relationship among ideology, discourse and politics. It is obvious that the media is being used by the powers who needs to build and influence public opinion. The critical analysis of news on ?Turkish Constitutional Referendum set for 12 September 2010 is made to figure out the ideologies of journalists and newspapers. Thus, it?s possible to reveal the social and ideological influences by the interpretations of news discourses of journalists. The mission of this thesis is to show how to reveal ideologies by receiving necessary messages and information from media.
