Measuring the efficiency of private high schools in Ankara using data envelopment analysis

Secondary education which undertakes education of human who are in transition period between childhood to youth, gives them at least minimum common liberal education and prepares them both to higher education and to profession according to their abilities, is very important for Turkey. On account of this, measuring efficiencies of the private high schools in Turkey has an extremely different significant importance. In this thesis, the efficiencies of forty four private high schools in Ankara for the year 2006 were measured. First, the data on sixty private high schools for the period of 2005?2006 was analyzed to measure their relative efficiencies. Data Envelopment Analysis method was applied to evaluating the relative efficiencies of forty four private high schools whose data are applicable for analysis. Data Envelopment Analysis is a technique based on mathematical programming used for measuring relative efficiencies of making decision units carrying out similar activities with multiple inputs /outputs. In this study, three applications were applied for efficiency measurement. In the first application, the relative efficiency of 44 private high schools was calculated and efficient and non-efficient private high schools were determined. In the second application, efficiency degree of variable which are effective on vii relative efficiency of private high schools, was determined. Therefore, eight different combinational analyses which exclude a variable every combination were done. In the third application, one of the six private high schools which were determined as being effective in previous analyses was taken out of system in the every practice and rest of high school?s efficiency was measured. As a result, it is observed that none of six private high schools lose their efficiency even one of them was taken out of the system. This shows that the results acquired from second application are coincided.
