11 ANALYSIS OF THE DOORS OF TRADITIONAL TURKISH HOUSES IN CENTRAL ANKARA, AYAŞ AND BEYPAZARI DISTRICTS (M.Sc. Thesis) Haydar Ali ŞAŞMAZ GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY June 2002 ABSTRACT Passing from traditional way of living to modern way of living left traditional houses alone by their own destiny. Houses left by themselves are disappearing one by one with various reasons. Even if the structural frames of the houses remain standing, the doors as most frequently used wooden elements, are more easily damaged and disappear more rapidly. Because of insufficient interest on traditional houses nobody pays enough attention on restoration of the traditional doors closely to their original shapes. In this work restoration of these traditional houses were examined in Altındağ, Ayaş and Beypazarı districts, where traditional houses are abundant, among them, relief and inventory of the outer and leaving and inventory of the outer and inner doors that are important were taken for documentation and leaving to the future generations. The author emphasizes on construction, metal fittings and frames of the traditional wooden doors. In this respect there were observed both some similarities and dissimilarities in construction styles and common sizes of the doors. Timbers used in door construction in all three of these districts were of yellow pine in outer doors, and pine in inner doors.
