An evaluation on the re-functioning process of Ankara trainstation and it's surroundings

The foundations of modern architecture were laid with the industrial revolution and became widespread during the mid-20th century; It is an innovative and original architectural movement in which the technology was adapted in line with the demands of the era. Although it cannot be said exactly when this process started, It is accepted that it had started with the engineering structures of the 19th century. These structures are either built for an entirely new function or they are structures that offer new engineering solutions to older functions. Train stations, which is one of these structures, had entered our lives again with the industrial revolution and the invention of steam locomotives. Railways, which carries economic importance in the society, had also determined the political and cultural conjuncture. With the involvement of the train in our lives as a means of transportation and the widespread of its use, tariffs on the train lines were applied and the need for binding structures for the railways were needed. In response to this need, train stations have taken their place among modern architectural structures. Train stations are important structures that also determine the urban identity. Train stations are not only large-scaled public places that offer technical units, accomodation, loading and unloading areas, waiting areas, resting and eating areas but also they have become the representative of the cultural, architectural and commercial characteristics of the era. During the Ottoman times, the train station infrastructure began to provide the first examples of railway entry into our lands. Ankara Train Station, one of the most important of these structures, has a highly unique place as it carries the traces of the republic and a new capital journey. Ankara Train Station building is a symbolic structure with the change and development it creates in the city and It is the most important dynamic of the cultural axle established in the city. However, the rapid developments in the technology have decreased the functionality of the current station with new and faster transportation alternatives. Ankara Train Station, which has an important place in the history of both the republic and modern architecture, have lost the circulation density because of the newly built high-speed train station. In order to maintain its existence, It must have the value it deserves with a correct comprehensive re-functioning proposal. At this point, primarily to assess the current re-functioning problem of Ankara Train Station, re-functioned train stations were examined over the examples in the world and Turkey. And It is aimed at proposing to the structure, a comprehensive re-functioning approach suitable for its location, demands and symbolic identity in order to emphasize its importance for Ankara.
