The mediating role of self-regulation on the relationship between maternal attitude and online game addiction

The aim of the study was to search the mediating role of self-regulation in the relationship between maternal attitude and Online game addiction. The mediating role of self-regulation was investigated on the relationship between the internal variable maternal attitude and the external variable Online game addiction. Through purposeful sampling, 224 students in various secondary schools in the Akdagmadeni district of Yozgat province were identified in 2018-2019 academic year. Personal Information Form, Leuven Perceived Parenting Scale, Online Game Addiction Scale and Self-Regulation Scale are the data collection tools of the study. In this correlational study, the mediation role of self-regulation was tested in explaining the relationship between maternal attitude and Online game addiction by using Structural Equation Modeling. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used to summarize the data. The data were analyzed by using statistical programs. First, the validity of the scales were searched using confirmatory factor analysis According to the results, the model test values for the scales (𝛘𝟐/df) were found to be less than three. It indicated that the measurement tools were in agreement. The reliability of the scales was searched through Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient, CR value, AVE ve correlation coefficients and found to be satisfactory except unsuccessful self-regulation scale. As the main finding of the study, the full mediation effect of self-regulation was seen in the relationship between the external and internal variables of the study. According to the results, the relationship between maternal attitude and Online game addiction is significant and positive after the inclusion of the mediator variable "self-regulation" into the relationship. The relationships between maternal attitude and self-regulation, between mediator variable self-regulation and internal variable Online gaming addiction were also positive and significant. Hence, the findings indicated a positive significant relationship between mother attitude and Online game addiction; self-regulation playing an intermediary role in this relationship.
