ABSTRACT PhD THESIS ELEKCTRODE SELECTION HAVING ELECTROCATALYTIC SURFACE FOR ANODIC AND CATHODIC REACTIONS GÜLFEZA KARDAŞ ÇUKUROVA UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT ADVISER : Doç. Dr. Birgül YAZICI Year: 1999 Page: 173 Jüri : Prof.Dr.Mehmet ERBÎL : Prof.DrAttila YILDIZ : Prof.Dr.Oktay ERBATUR : Doç.Dr.Halime PAKSOY In this work, the electrochemical behaviour of Pt, Ni and Pb has been investigated in the solutions of 0,01 M NaCl and 0,01 M Na2SÛ4 with/and without addition of different alcohol (methyl, ethyl and propyl). For all solutions, at pH: 3, 5, 7 and 8 was worked and the pH dependence was also obtained. For this purpose, three electrode thecnic has been applied. It has been drown cyclic voltamograms by the working electrodes of Pt, Ni or Pb seperately for every experiment. Pt and SCE were used as auxilary and reference electrode respectively. To obtain the cathodic behaviour of the same electrode (Pt, Ni, Pb), simple electrolysis system has been used. Anot was Pt, and cathode were the metals of Pt, Ni and Pb. Different potential (5, 10, 15, 20V) has been applied to the system at different pH (3, 5, 7, 8) and different temperature (25, 50, 75°C), the hydrogen gas volume measured evaluated from the cathode and the gain persentage of hydrogen gas has been calculated. In working environment and conditions, the obtained results show that Pt and Pb show the most catalytic effect among the worked metal on electrooxidation of the alcohol. This effect depend on their oxides formed on the surface. For hydrogen production, Ni is the best catalytic effective metal in all which are under examined. Key Words: Hydrogen, electrooxidation, catalytic effect II
