Classification and prevalence of auricular diseases in the dogs brought to pet clinics in the area of Antalya

Aim of this study was to determine the distrubition of seasonal ear diseases of dogs which were brought to a private hospital in Antalya having different breed, age and sex between 2012-2014. Thirty seven dogs of different breed, age, sex were brought to clinic who were suffering with scratching ear flaps, head shaking, stifness, discharge of fluid from ear and bad odor during 2013-2014. Maximum number of cases appeared in spring and following that winter, autumn and summer. Ear diseases which were diagnosed during the study consisted of chronic otitis externa (30%), acute otitis externa (21%), auricular wound (19%), allergic dermatitis (11%), chronic otitis externa purulenta (8%), foreign material (5%), polype (3%) and ear scabies (3%). Maximum number of cases appeared Labrador, Cocker and Golden Retriever, following that Terrier and German Shepherd Dog breeds in current study. In conclusion retrospective study was conducted to determine the prevalance of ear diseases around Antalya. It showed that ratio of ear diseases in dogs was 22.8%. Among the ear diseases, otitis externa was appeared more frequently then other diseases especially in dog breeds with long and floppy ears.
