A preliminary study to identify symptoms of Couvade Syndrome (sympathetic pregnancy) in expectant fathers in Antalya

This cross-sectional study, conducted in Antalya in 2025, aimed to determine the prevalence of Couvade Syndrome among the partners of pregnant women attending family health centers and to examine associated psychosocial and demographic factors. Couvade Syndrome is a psychosomatic condition involving physical (e.g., weight gain, nausea, sleep disturbances) and psychological (e.g., irritability, anxiety) symptoms in expectant fathers. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and analyzed with SPSS 26.0. Results showed that 88.2% of participants experienced at least one symptom. Common symptoms included weight gain (59.1%), sleep disturbance (59.8%), nausea (50.6%), irritability (32.7%), and financial concerns (33.2%). These findings support existing literature highlighting psychological contributors such as anxiety, ambivalence, and guilt in the syndrome's etiology. Significant associations were found between symptom frequency and factors like first-time fatherhood, gestational age, relationship quality, and education level. A positive correlation was also observed between prenatal attachment and symptom severity. In conclusion, the study reveals a high prevalence of Couvade Syndrome and emphasizes the need for increased psychosocial support for expectant fathers in primary care settings.
