The Effect of Umbilical Cord Coiling Index Measured in Antenatal Period on Pregnancy Results Aim:In intrauterine life, the umbilical cord that forms the bond between the baby and the mother and ensures the development of the fetus.In many studies, it has been predicted that the curvilinear structure of the umbilical cord, being less folded or folded, has adverse effects on pregnancy.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of folded structure of umbilical cord on pregnancy outcome. Material and Method: 461 primigravid pregnant women were enrolled in the study. Umbilical cord coiling index was calculated in pregnant women who were examined ultrasonographically between 18-24 weeks of gestation. Patients according to the umbilical coil index; it was divided into three groups: hypocoil (low curved), normocoil (normal), hypercoyl (very curved). If the umbilical coiling index is less than 0,2, it is classified as hypocoil; between 0,2 and 0,4 normocoil and if it is greater than 0,4, it is called as hypercoil.They were followed up in terms of diseases (GDM, GHT, preeclampsia, IUGR, oligohydroamniosis) that may develop during pregnancy.The weeks of birth and birth patterns of the patients were recorded. Patients who developed fetal distress during delivery were recorded. Neonatal birth weights, meconium delivery, cord blood gas pH, babies' fifth minute Apgar scores, placental weight and thickness were evaluated. The data were analyzed using SPSS.22 statistical software. Result: It was observed that UCI which is hypocoil and hypercoil was associated with low birth weight, IUGR, development of oligohydroamniosis, fetal distress development, meconium delivery, and lower acid gas pH and lower 5th Apgar scores. On the other side, it was observed that the coiling index was not associated with preterm labor, GDM, GHT, preeclampsia, placental abruptionand fetal death. Conclusion: During the routine ultrasonography examination in the second trimester, looking at the cord coiling index, which will not prolong the examination period, can give an idea in terms of diseases that may develop in many pregnancies.
