Relationship between antenatal body shape index and pregnancy complications

Abstract (EN)
Objective: Gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia are common complications of pregnancy that can lead to serious harm both to the mother and the fetus. Fetal and maternal mortality and morbidity are reduced by early recognition of patients during pregnancy, appropriate follow-up and preventive treatments. In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between body shape index (ABSI), calculated based on antenatal measurements of the height, weight and waist circumference, and gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. Method:184 patients were examined prospectively. 13 pregnancies that were terminated, and 1 twin pregnancy which was learned after care were excluded from the study. 170 patients that were in 6-16th gestational weeks participated in the study. BMI and ABSI were calculated with height, weight and waist measurements during the 6-16th gestational weeks. The patients were examined according to the evaluation of gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia during their follow-up. Results: Gestational complications were present in 41 of 170 (24.1%) patients. 19 (11.2%) had GDM, 28 (16.5%) had GHT, and 4 (2.4%) had preeclampsia. ABSI distributions of patients with and without complications were not statistically different (p = 0.437). BMI and waist circumference values of patients with complications were significantly higher than the values of patients without any complications (p values; p = 0.006, p = 0.010, respectively). ABSI values of patients with and without GHT were not significantly different (p=0.268). BMI and waist circumference values of patients with GHT were consistently higher than those without GHT (range of p values; p=0.020, p=0.038, respectively). Conclusion: In light of the data in our study, it was determined that antenatal body shape index has no clinical significance in evaluating the risk of developing gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. In addition, as a result of our study, it was determined that BMI and waist circumference could provide clinical clues in predicting pregnancy complications. Our study is the first in terms of its subject and makes a significant contribution to the literature.
