Abstract (EN)

The aim of our study is to evaluate patients using antidepressant medications from a bruxism perspective. Our study was conducted on 118 patients who applied to Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Faculty of Dentistry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic. Bruxism was detected using a 6-question survey administered to patients and clinical evaluation methods. Clinically, masseter muscle palpation and hypertrophy, tooth wear, marks on the intraoral buccal mucosa were examined, and patients' temporomandibular joint examinations were performed. Data obtained from the patients; They were evaluated in two groups as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) type antidepressant drugs. In addition, considering the patients medication use duration; A separate evaluation was made of the data obtained by grouping them according to their use for less than 1 year or for a long time. Of 118 patients; 81.4% (n= 96) were women and 18.6% (n=22) were men. The ages of the patients ranged from 18 to 77 years, with an average of 42.6 ± 14.3 years. 57.6% (n=68) of the patients use SSRI and 42.4% use SNRI (n=50) group antidepressants. The bruxism rate in the SNRI group was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the SSRI group. The rate of bruxism in the group with drug use for more than 1 year was significantly (p<0.05) higher than in the group with drug use for less than 1 year. Bruxism may develop as an undesirable effect after the use of SSRI and SNRI group antidepressants. Increasing the awareness of patients and physicians who prescribe these drugs about bruxism that can develop with drug use; If bruxism develops, early diagnosis and treatment is very important in terms of reviewing the patient's antidepressant drug treatment and re-planning it if necessary.
