Bruxism and sleep disorders in patients with antidepressant use who diagnosed with depressive disorder and anxiety disorder

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the incidence of bruxism, bruxism-related factors and sleep disorders in patients with depressive disorder and anxiety disorder using antidepressants. Method: A total of 273 patients aged 18 years and over, who were diagnosed with anxiety and depression, who agreed to participate in the study, who had been using antidepressants for at least 1 month, and 273 healthy control groups were included in this study. Along with the sociodemographic data form, Epworth Daytime Sleepiness Scale (EDSS), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D), Beck Anxiety Scale (BAS), Bruxism Questionnaire, Pitsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQS) were applied to the patient and control groups. Results: Bruxism was detected in 73.3% of the patient group and 28.2% of the control group. The most commonly used antidepressants in the patient group are; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (Escitalopram and Sertraline). The PSQS, EDSS and HAM-D scale scores of the patient group were higher than the control group. In the correlation analysis for patient group; it was determined that there was a low level of correlation between PSQS score and EDSS score in the same direction, moderate relationship between HAM-D and a moderate relationship between Beck score in the same direction. It was understood that there was a low level of correlation between EDSS score and HAM-D score in the same direction, a low level relationship between BAS score and a moderate level of correlation between HAM-D score and BAS score in the same direction.When the factors affecting the presence of bruxism in the patient group were evaluated with multivariate regression analysis; high school and higher education level, , PSQS, EDSS factors were found to be risk factors. Discussion: For patients who will start their antidepressant treatment, necessary information should be provided in terms of the development and follow-up of bruxism, and each patient should be evaluated and treated in terms of bruxism.
