Özet (EN)

The subject of our study is how women adorned themselves in the antiquity and it is focused on Greece and Rome. However we have shortly mentioned about older societies as Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Minos and Etruscan in Mediterranean Sea region who influenced these cultures. And in this way we have brought up a great widespread and clear influence. There is a variation on direction of needs, believes and conditions about societies as well.To cover the body with animal skin for protection against hard weather conditions were gradually changed into dress. Both Greek and Roman garments are simple design. Garments consist of one or two parts of a large square or oblong fabric. Then the fabric wrapped around the body and fastened on the shoulders by brooches, pins or sewing. Garments were quite loose-fitting and length of the garment reached on the ankles. Difference was created by the pleates and the folds or kinds of wrapping. Generally, this garments were worn one over the other.Greek woman who influenced by Minos and East cultures wore peplos, khiton, himation and epiblema. She combed her hair in a simple style and bounded top of the head by a scarf, ribbon or hairnet. Especially the method of jewellery from ancient Egypt was developed and so created magnificient kinds. Women decorated their hair, heads, ears, necks, legs, fingers, garments and all their bodies as well.Roman who was influenced by Etrusc and Greek culture considered symbolism and they allowed to wear the woman according to her position and function in society. For example toga praetexta was for freeborn girl; tunica recta was for bride; stola was for matron and mother of the family; ricinium was for widow. All women of Roman society combed their hair as well as garments to sembolism. Especially empresses? hairstyles became most elaborate and ornate with masses of curls in periods. Jewelry was not more artistic than Greeks.Kinds or ornaments of fabric in Greece and Rome were rich. Not suprisingly colors in Rome were explained by symbolism as well.In both Greek and Roman cultures? adventure of footwear developed and reached to footgears and boot that started with Egyptians? sandals.Cosmetics were also very important for all women. They applied surprising material for their beauty even if it is harmful.The veil became a symbol of virtue and modesty for Greek and Roman women outside that had first been used in Sumer by the priestesses.Fashion existed for every subject and changed for the periods of time.
