This paper deals with the various types and characteristics of Arabic and Turkish sentences, analyzes their resemblance and divergence using a contrastive analysis approach, and attempts to identify the role and importance of similarities and differences in the teaching of sentences.Contrastive linguistics/analysis examines the convergence and divergence between the native language and target language. However, this analysis is concentrated more upon divergence. Both Arabic and Turkish undoubtedly possess a structure all their own. Students with different native tongues encounter different problems when learning Arabic. Arabic is a foreign language for Turks, therefore the goal is to compare Arabic with Turkish, identify the differences between the two languages, and thus determine ahead of time the difficulties the student will encounter.From a sentence standpoint, just as there are similarities between Arabic and Turkish, there are also differences. These similarities and differences can be summarized as follows: a) sentence types that exist in Arabic but not in Turkish b) sentence types that exist in Turkish but not in Arabic c) sentence types that exist in both languages d) sentences in Arabic and Turkish that have different structures despite word similarity.From a teaching standpoint, there are advantages and disadvantages to these groups, which emerge when the two languages are contrasted on the basis of sentence structure. According to the the strong version of the contrastive analysis theory, the existence of similarities makes instruction easier. Therefore it is beneficial to begin instruction after similarities and difference have been identified, on the basis of these two characteristics.
