An examination of short stories translations from arabic to Turkish in the context of Gideon Toury's target-oriented theory

It is known that translation, which is a way of sharing the efforts of different nations in fields such as science, art and thought, is as old as the history of humanity. The language phenomenon, which is considered one of the most essential elements of culture, has undoubtedly attracted the attention of societies since ancient times. According to today's sources, it is known that the translation activity dates back to Ancient India and Ancient Greece. The translation activity, which has traveled simultaneously with the history of humanity, continues to develop throughout this process and continues its mission as an activity that needs to be used in every field today. In the present day where translation activity is of such importance, studies on translated works gain importance and contribute to the field of literary translation. In this thesis, ten short stories written in the Modern Arabic Literature period and translated to our language by more than one translator were selected, and after the translators' decisions were discussed comparatively, each target text was evaluated in line with the "Target-Oriented Theory" put forward by Gideon Toury and general translation strategies. Translations made by remaining faithful to the source language are considered "adequate", and translations that seen closer to the target language and culture are considered "acceptable" translations. This study, whose purpose is not to find translation errors and which focuses on understanding the reasons for translator preferences at the point of transferring linguistic and cultural elements to the target language, was carried out with Toury's comparative analysis technique. As a result of the obtained results, it has been determined that out of the twenty-four target texts that are the subject of our study, four of them were translated with a source-oriented approach and twenty of them were translated with a target-oriented approach, and the target-oriented approach outweighs by a significant margin.
