Synthesis and spectroscopic properties of aryl-substituted bodipy compounds

Abstract (EN)
4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene compounds, commonly known as Bodipys, are a class of dyestuff that have attracted attention in recent years due to their strong absorptions in the visible region in elektromagnetic spectrum, high fluorescence quantum yields, sharp absorption peaks, chemical stability, and convenience for the chemical design strategies. This study is about the synthesis, chemical and photophysical characterization of some dipyrrin ligand and Bodipy complexes. For this purpose, firstly, 2,4-diphenyl-1H-pyrrole compounds - to be used as starting compounds - were obtained from substituted benzaldehyde and acetophenone derivatives through different organic reactions. In the second step, dipyrromethene ligands and their borondifluoride complexes (Bodipy compounds) were synthesized by means of acid-catalyzed condensation reactions of different aromatic aldehydes with pyrroles by following one pot synthetic procedures. Among them, 2 pyrrole derivatives, 2 dipyrromethene and 7 Bodipy compounds are novel compounds. The structures of the novel compounds were elucidated from FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and High Resolution mass spectra (HRMS). Photophysical parameters of the final ligand and complexes (absorption and fluorescence wavelengths, molar absorption coefficient, stokes shift, fluorescence quantum yield and full width at half media) were determined using UV/visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. These quantities were interpreted depending on the type of substituted groups, steric effect and conjugation. In addition, it has been demonstrated that dipyrromethene compounds can be used as colorimetric pH sensors due to their absorption wavelengths differentiation depending on the ambient pH.
