Midterm and longterm results in posterior cruciate ligament retaining total knee arthroplasty

This study aimed to retrospectively investigate and to present midterm and longterm results of the operations with the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) retaining total knee arthroplasthy. In this study, 59 knees of the 54 patients were evaluated, who treated with PCL retaining total knee arthroplasthy between June 2006- June 2014 in our clinic. 46 patients(%86) were female and 8 (%14) were male. The mean age of this study was 67,4 (54-82) and the mean follow up period was 35,7 (12-96) months. Our patients were evaluated according to American Knee Society Score and functional score. Radiological evaluation was performed according to Total Knee Arhroplasthy Radiological Evaluotion Criteria. Knee score was 36-72 (mean 48,4) before the surgery, 76-100 (mean 93,3) after the surgery. 55 knees had (%93,2) perfect knee scores and 4 knees (%6,8 ) had good knee scores according to Knee Society Score system. Functional score was 31,2 (15-60) prior to the surgery and 84,8 (60-100) subsequently. In the evaluation according to the functional score we obtained perfect results in 34 knees (%58), good results in 22 knees (%37) and moderate results in 3 knees (%5). Patients had a mean 8,9° (5° valgus-20° varus) varus prior to the surgery and mean 4,3° valgus alignment after the surgery. In one case we had a revision total knee surgery because of the late infection of the knee. As a result of our PCL retaining total knee arthroplasthy applications, we obtained %93,2 perfect knee score and % 58 perfect knee functional score. These values were convenient with many other studies in literature and even more successful in knee score. PCL retaining total knee arthroplasthy is a favorable orthopaedic surgery when performed with adequate patients, in an adequate operating room with actual surgical techniques by the experienced surgeons.
