Photographic technics in the science of archaeologhy

iiABSTRACTSince the beginning of the 20th century, especially among the Europeancountries which have completed the industrialisation and have increased theirwelfare level, the science of archaeology and the art of photography have developedsimultaneously as a result of the increasing interest in the culture and art areas. Theroutes of this duo have intersected in a short period of time. Particularly after thedocumentary power of the photography has been understood well, the first examplesof the archaeological photography have rapidly emerged together with the discoveryjourneys of the European voyagers to the East. The archaeological photographytoday is an indispensable component of excavations, and has become a subject arearequiring particular expertise in cooperation with the developing techniques in bothexcavation and photography. The subjects covered in this thesis include somedetailed information obtained from the research study on the traditional techniqueswhich have come into existence in time and from my individual experiences in thearea.The thesis, on the one hand, gives some basic necessary knowledge ofphotography to the beginners. On the other hand, the advanced photographytechniques required for the science of archaeology are taken into account. Then,rapidly developing two branches, aerial and underwater photography, which areincreasingly used in archaeology in the last years, are examined in a detailed way.This thesis, finally, aims to become a reference work for the followingresearchers in their studies in the area of archaeological photography, in which thereare only a few written publications in the academia of our country.
