The effect of augmented reality practices on the improvement of primary school 2nd grade students' vocabulary

In this research, the effect of augmented reality applications on second graders' level of learning of idioms was investigated. The research was conducted in the spring semester of 2017-2018 educational year. 29 second graders in a state school in Tepebaşı district in Eskişehir province participated in the research. One class formed the control group and another class formed the experimental group at this school grade. The idioms for the experimental group were taught using augmented reality applications. The experimental group application research lasted for two weeks and each day ten idioms were taught in the order they were presented in the Turkish language course book for second graders under the theme of "Health, Sports and Play". In the research, "Idioms-Matching Form", Idioms-Gap Filling Form" and "Idioms-Sentence Construction Form", which were were developed by the researcher, were utilized. In the research, one of the quasi-experimental designs, the static group pre-test and post-test was utilized. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS 24 software and a significant difference between the groups in favor of the experimental group was found. Moreover, students' answers on the "Idioms-Sentence Construction Form" were analyzed using content analysis as a proof of the change in the level of student learning and a support for research results. Based on these findings, it can be claimed that augmented reality applications are effective in developing second graders' level of learning of idioms. The use of augmented reality applications for the other components of vocabulary knowledge is suggested.
