The effect of augmented reality application on nursing students' intravenous catheterization application skill, level of satisfaction in learning and perception of self-confidence

Abstract (EN)
Aim: This research was conducted to determine effect of Augmented Reality (AR) application on intravenous (IV) catheter placement skills, satisfaction level of current learning and self-confidence perception of nursing students. Material and Method: This randomized controlled study started with 101 nursing students and was completed with 91 students. To collect data; "Student Descriptive Characteristics Form (SDCF)", "The Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning Scale (SCLS)" and "Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion Procedure Form (PIVC-IPF)" were used. Number, percentile, arithmetic mean and, one of the non-parametric tests Mann-Whitney U test was used to evaluate the data. According to the results obtained from the post-application data, the power value was calculated using the GPower program. The power of this study, which was completed with 91 participants with an effect size of 0.62 and a margin of error of 0.05, was determined as 0.90. Results: The students in the experimental group who were trained with the AR application had significantly higher scores on the SCLS and the "Self-Confidence in Learning" sub-dimension scores compared to the students in the control group (p=0.005; p=0.001). However, although the average score of the students in the sub-dimension "Satisfaction with Current Learning" did not differ in both groups, the satisfaction scores of the students in the experimental group were higher (p>0.05). Although the students in the experimental group had higher IV catheter placement success averages and shorter average time for application, there was no significant difference in both groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: AG application increases students' self-confidence levels. Using the AR application may affect positively skill teaching and success levels of students in other nursing practices.
