Abstract (EN)
Bipolar membranes are called ionic membranes that convert water into OH- and H+ ions by using intermediate phases in the electrical system. The aim of this thesis is to produce bipolar membrane for acid and base recovery and to use these membranes in electrodialysis cell. In this study, five application have been investigated. In the first application, different anion exchanger and thicknesses were studied and in the second application, the anion exchange layer was absorbed with FeCl3 after pouring cation exchange layer. In the third application, mixing of anion exchange layer and cation exchange layer solution were poured as intermediate layer in contrast to the first application. In the fourth application, dimettylformamide was used as solvent in contrast to the first application. In the fifth application, polychloromethylstryrene which produced from polystyrene to use for bipolar membrane in laboratuar condition. In the bipolar membranes (BPM) with chloroform solvent, the lowest bipolar membrane resistance was measured as 4.77 ohms (membrane 5) and the highest membrane resistance as 290 ohms (membrane 2). In the BPMs with chloroform solvent+FeCl3 adsorbent, the lowest bipolar membrane resistance was 9.24 ohm (membrane 17) and the highest membrane resistance was 34 ohm (membrane 15). Membranes of third applications didn't conduct electiricity. In the BPMs with dimethylformamide solvent, the lowest bipolar membrane resistance was determined as 0.36 ohms (membrane 28) and the highest membrane resistance was as 4.32 ohms (membrane 36). In the BPMs with dimethylformamide solvent+produced polychloromethylstyrene(PKMS), the lowest bipolar membrane resistance was determined as 1.5 ohm (37th membrane) and the highest membrane resistance was 9 ohm (45th membrane). In addition, performance of production of H2SO4 from the Na2SO4 salt was also investigated. In the bipolar membranes with chloroform solvent, pH decreased from 3.84 to 3.81, while the pH reduced from 3.7 to 2.57 in the bipolar membranes with dimethylformamide solvent. In the same way, In the bipolar membranes with dimethylformamide solvent+produced PKMS, pH decreased from 3.95 to 2.55 and the pH decreased from 3.84 to 3.12 in the bipolar membranes with chloroform solvent+FeCl3 adsorbent. In addition, base production tests were performed. In this context, bipolar membranes with solvent dimethylformamide increased pH from 10.96 to 11.62 and BPM with dimethylformamide solvent+produced PKMS increased pH from 9.15 to 10.35 in base production.
