Abstract (EN)

It has been determined before that eosinophils, mast cells, macrophages, lymphosites and released mediators from some cells are forming a chronic inflammation with varying degrees according to severity of disease in asthmatic children?s airway. In previous studies that have been shown to be activated of platelets, in different inflammatory lung diseases including asthma. Mean platelet volume is affected by the activation of platelets. In our study we aimed to research the values of mean platelet volumes, between pretreatment and posttreatment values in wheezing phenotypes of asthmatic children. This study was performed retrospectively by analysing the patient data between January 2005 ? February 2010 in Izzet Baysal School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Pulmonology. Complete Blood Count test was analysed from the blood samples anticoagulated with K3EDTA. For statistical analysis SPSS 16.0 software was used and results were compared with student T-Test, Paired-t Test, One Way Anova Test, Benferroni Analysis as posthoc test, Pearson Correlation and Kruskal Wallis test. p<0.05 was accepted as a significant in statistical analysis.120 asthmatic (68 boy (%56.6), 52 girl (%43.4)), and 84 healthy (30 boy (%35.7), 54 girl (%64.3) children were taken to the study. Pretreatment mean platelet volume values of patients are found significantly high (p=0,000) in study group, when compared with all study group (8,08±1,16) and control group (7,18±0,92). Also in early transient wheezing, non-atopic wheezing and atopic asthma subgroups, pretreatment mean platelet volumes are found significiantly higher than control group (p<0.05). In this study, it was concluded that asthmatic children?s mean platelet volumes are higher because of platelets activation. Keywords: asthma, wheezing, mean platelet volume, childhood
