Abstract (EN)
Multiple relations between Turkey and the USA constitute thesignificant factor of Turkey?s foreign policy. It is extremely vital to recognizethe origin of these relations so as to comprehend the foreign affairsthoroughly and to appraise the present and future relations betweencountries. In this sense, analyzing the relations between Turkey and the USAexperienced during the Era of Atatürk is considered to be constructive inorder to figure out the present status and to establish better future policies.It is essential that Turkey stand up once again and learn from the past,when Atatürk, the founder of Turkish Republic, carried out decent foreignpolicies and fought against occupation and attacks of imperialist countries.The determination will lead to normal political, economic and social-culturalrelations rather than being dependent ones.In this study, the relations between America and Turkey which wasceased by World War I are dealt with on the grounds of the Era of Atatürk interms of politics, economy and socio-culture. Also, the basics of the relationsbetween Ottoman Empire and the USA are put forward in order to examinethe origins of the relations. The relations during the Era of Atatürk, thereafter,are analyzed in terms of significant incidents and various happenings. Therelations are also considered at length in conformity with wise, balanced andmultiple policies that Atatürk established and practiced in his very era. In thissense, considering the efforts to improve relations with the USA during theEra of Atatürk and comparing the foreign policies of that time with those ofthe present, the study reveals how far we are away from the principles andrevolutions of Ataturk.The study consists of eight chapters that are divided into four mainapproaches, the first of which includes the main frame of the research. In thesecond chapter, studies which were carried out by other individuals andinstitutions are mentioned briefly. In the third chapter, pre-Atatürk-erarelations between Turks and Americans are examined in details as well asthe political and trading views throughout the following relations. In the fourthchapter, the foreign affairs during the Era of Atatürk are mentioned with theirprinciples and features . In the fifth chapter, both the basics of Americandiplomacy and American policies during the Era of Atatürk are studied indetails.In the sixth chapter which is comprised of the Era of Atatürk andreaches the conclusion, the efforts to reestablish the relations betweenAmerica and the Parliament of the Republic of Turkey are mentioned as wellas the American attitudes at the Lausanne Conference and the treaties ofboth countries during the very era. Also reestablishments of official relationsand the course of later relations are put forward. In this chapter readers areinformed with American schools and American missionary attempts. In orderto put forward the socio-cultural dimensions of the relations, immigration ofthe Turks to the USA and the influence of American Literature on that ofTurkey are dealt with through the end of the chapter.The seventh chapter conveys Atatürk?s own contribution to the veryrelations and the friendship between Roosevelt, the president of the USA adAtatürk. The chapter ends with the reflections of Atatürk?s death over theUSA and American media.In the eighth or last chapter, the findings and suggestions regardingthese finding which led to the conclusion are put forward.The frequently used words in this study are; Turkey, the USA, the Eraof Atatürk, foreign policies and foreign affairs.
