Abstract (EN)

Atatürk's conception of history represents an approach that forms the intellectual basis of Turkish modernization and evaluating the past not only as a chronological sequence of events, but as a dynamic social laboratory that shapes national consciousness. Atatürk has referred history as a strategic area in terms of building national identity, strengthening the idea of independence, sustaining social progress, and institutionalizing the ideals of modernization. This study analyzes Atatürk’s historiographical interpretation in relation to his evaluations of the Ottoman past, Islamic civilization, and methodological principles of historical writing, while examining the influence of this perspective on the nation-building process of the early Turkish Republic. Studies show that Atatürk's approach to history was built on a foundation that distant to dogmatic assumptions, was based on empirical knowledge, and prioritized critical thinking. In his assessments of the Ottoman Empire, while acknowledging the state's military and cultural achievements, he addressed the structural weaknesses that prepared the disintegration process of the empire, the weakening of central authority, economic dependence, the exclusion of national will from political processes, and the development of privileged positions of different elements against the Turkish element, from a scientific perspective. This approach points to history as a field of rational accounting and learning lesson that separates it from the other approaches that completely reject the past or glorify it without interrogating. In his assessments of Islamic history, Atatürk emphasized Islam's civilization-building nature throughout history; however, he stated that the fanaticism, stagnation, and dogmatic structure arising from the misinterpretation of religion limited social progress. According to him, the place of religion in social life should not contradict the principles of reason, science, and progress; on the contrary, it should be based on a foundation that supports them. Atatürk's view of history also establishes the historical foundation of national sovereignty and independence consciousness. The Ottoman Empire's dependence on foreign powers, the loss of its economic sovereignty through capitulations, and the removal of the nation's will from state administration were considered by Atatürk as elements leading to national disaster. In this context, history was considered not only for understanding the past but also as an intellectual source that strengthens the legitimacy of the nation's right to self-determination. Central to Atatürk’s historical thought is the connection between historical consciousness and the principles of national sovereignty and independence. The erosion of Ottoman autonomy through foreign intervention, capitulations, and the exclusion of popular sovereignty was interpreted by Atatürk as key factors leading to national decline. Accordingly, history became a foundational resource for legitimizing the nation’s right to self-determination and collective dignity. Atatürk's understanding of history is based on a questioning mindset, the scientific method, and a perspective that prioritizes national interests in the construction of national consciousness. He positions history not as a static sequence of events, but as a dynamic reference field that guides the future. In this context, Atatürk's philosophy of history shaped the ideological and cultural infrastructure of the modern Republic of Turkey; it undertook a function of instilling critical thinking and national identity consciousness in history education
