Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, the dress code revolution in Atatürk's understanding of modernization is examined and the changes in dress code experienced from the Ottoman Empire to the Republican Period are examined. The study examines the process from the modernization movements that started in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century to Atatürk's dress code revolution. The aim of the thesis is to examine the effects of the reforms in the Ottoman Empire, the transformations in the social structure and Atatürk's dress code revolution in a historical perspective. In the first part of the study, the elements that determined women's and men's dress codes in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, the Tanzimat Period and the Constitutional Monarchy Period are discussed. In the second part, the dress code law issued in the Republican Period and the Hat Revolution, Atatürk's innovations in contemporary dress code and their effects on the modernization movements in the Republic of Turkey are analyzed. The thesis aims to show how Atatürk's dress code revolution transformed with the clothing culture coming from the Ottoman Empire and the revolutions introduced in the Republican Period.
