Comparison of the serum adiponectin levels in patients of atherosclerotic occlusive coronary artery disease and coronary artery ectasia with normal coronary anatomy

Abstract (EN)

Adiponectin that is known have a protective role against atherosclerosis (in thebeginning and at progression) with anti-inflammatory anti-atherogenic affect is one ofthe cytokins eluted from adipose tissue. The purpose of this study is to compare thelevels of serum adiponectin in atherosclerotic occlusive coronary artery disease(AOCAD), coronary artery ectasia (CAE) and normal coronary anatomy and toinvestigate the status and the applicability of adiponectin among the accepted classicalrisk factors in determining and predicting atherosclerotic CAD.Total of 88 patients were included in this study (25 control groups, 25AOCAD groups and 38 CAE patient groups). The patients which are stated as normalcoronary anatomy in their coroner angiographies are accepted as control group. Byaccepting as a reference the diameters of coroner arteries of control group patients,while the patients with 1.5 times larger segment/segments than references areaccepted as CAE, the patients with %70 stenosis in their coronar artery diameters areaccepted as AOCAD. The predicted value of adiponectin in the determination of CADis evaluated with logistic regression analysis.Serum adiponectin levels are determined in control, AOCAD and CAE groupsas; 6.73 ± 4, 3.3 ± 1.96, 4.31 ± 2.02, respectively. Adiponectin levels in AOCAD andCAE were manifestly low statistically according to control group (p<0.001, p=0.02,respectively). Adiponectin levels of AOCAD and CAE groups were similarstatistically (p>0.05). Adiponectin was found as a more important and independentrisk factor than other risk factors in the determination of CAD [ß=0.725, p=0.001,%95 CI (0.604 - 0.870)].There is no study in literature about the serum adiponectin levels in CAEwhich is accepted as a variant of CAD. From this point of view, our study was thefirst about this subject. We have found the adiponectin levels as low in CAE and havenot determined a meaningful difference between AOCAD and CAE in terms of serumadiponectin levels. However, we have agreed that the adiponectin levels can be avaluable cytokin in CAD determination.
