The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in schizophrenia, bipolar and the other psychotic disorders patients who treated with atypical antipsychotics

Atypical antipsychotic drugs chosed first for treatment refractor schizophrenic patients, recently they are used for bipolar disorders, psychotics depression and the other psychiatric disorders. Atypical antipsycotics (AP) are the first or adjuvan choose for the treatment programs.Treatment with antipsychotic medications can induce diabetes mellitus (DM) and metabolic syndrome ( MS). The current literatures indicated the increase risk of MS prevalence in psychiatric disorders. Recently, authors detected new diabetic diagnose in patients with treated antipsychotics. However, it?s unknow whether the MS is an independent risk factor or related with antipsychotic medication. Previes studies have reported that AP medication increase the metabolic side effects.The study comprised 47 schizophrenia, bipolar and the other psychotic disordered patients treated with antipsychotics who had applied to Firat University Firat Medical Center Department of Psychiatry as out- or in- patients and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar and the other psychotic disorder according to the criteria of DSM - IV. The patients were administered the sociodemographical data form and SCID. In the patients who were met the study criteria, glucose, triglyceride, cholesterole, and subtypes levels were obtained.This study demonstrate that antipsychotic medication is a powerful risk factor for occurence MS and the metabolic disorders. Patients who have high MS risks and the drug choise must be carefully followed.Key words: Atypical antipsychotic, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, metabolic syndrome.
