The east-west problem and national culture combination according to Attila İlhan: The comparative approach to the periods of Ghazi and National chief

The aim of this study is to examine the approach of the view point of Atilla İlhan -with his intellectual and writer identity -on Turkish modernization process, his confirmations on the problems of this process and the approach of ?national culture combination? which he offered as the solution of the problems. The thesis, put forward in the study is the possibility of assessing the solution ?national combination? which Atilla İlhan offered as a point of exist, starting with the idea that the modernization in Turkey did not process in the same way as in the West, taken as Westernization with a mistaken orientation and this mistaken orientation effected this whole process negatively. As the reflections of this in the practice are that the concept of modernization in the period of Mustafa Kemal and İsmet İnönü is being displayed and the output of the intention of setting up a discussion on the applicability of the concept or the approach.The study handles the modernization movements in the last period of the Ottoman Empire with its general terms, in a line come up to the Republic and at mostly intellectual level. Firstly, the character -distorted, imitation and disconnected with the society- of modernization, which stood in the limits of ?Westernization? because of some reasons which grown out of both the constitution of society and the state, and the mistakes of application and concept were displayed. Secondly, the approach of ?national cultural combination? of Atilla İlhan has been handled as a solution proposal to the problems which the process revealed. The concept regards ?a national and genuine combination consisting of our own cultures in contemporary standards with scientific methods? as necessary. It moves from the concept of taking the economic and social infrastructure to a point which will constitute the background of modernization. In the third chapter, -after the evaluation of the concept, the parts differing from other ?combination? concepts and the basic properties were introduced-, ?national modernizer? Mustafa Kemal period and ?Westernizer modern? İsmet İnönü period were compared as the samples of application.
