Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study is to examine the kinds of learning Augustine studied in De magistro (The Teacher). The book also suggests important philological discussions to make its case about kinds of learning. Augustine's discussion about signs is also examined in means of its connection with teaching and learning. Since Augustine had lived in a transition period between the ancient and middle ages, education in the Ancient World will be looked at in a general scope. It will be proceeded by examining Augustine's life in relation to his understanding of education, and then his other works on education will be studied for a more integrated approach on his thoughts about education. In the last chapter, De magistro's composition and philosophical sources will be examined. Augustine's three teaching approaches; teaching by reminding, teaching by presentation and teaching by discovering the truth within, and his interior teacher argument will be studied to exhibit how he based his suggestion that no human can teach another human anything.
