Urban development in European Union and Turkey: Istanbul- Frankfurt example

The main purpose of the thesis; to propose urban development policies and strategies in line with EU standards to improve the quality of urban life in Istanbul by comparing the quality of life in Istanbul and Frankfurt. Quantitative methodology was used in the research ant it was designed in two stages: In the first stage of the research, 1468 participants living in Istanbul were included in the research using convenience sampling and carried out between 1 November 2018-15 December 2018. In the second stage of the research, 1292 participants who were reached by using convinence sampling in Frankfurt, Germany completed the questionnaire translated into Germany between 1 January 2019 - 15 February 2019. The data collected in both cities were loaded to SPSS 24.0 program separately and necessary analyzes were performed. In result of the research, first of all, the obstacles and problems before the sustainable urban development and the factors affecting the quality of urban life and urban satisfaction levels in both cities were determined. In result of the research; it is understood that the satisfaction of urban life is positively affected by the quality of municipal services in cities, employment and economic opportunities in the city, social and cultural wealth and natural and indigenous beauties in cities. Furthermore, it was understood that all of these variables reduce the migration demand of urban residents from the city. Finally, according to the findings of the research, some opinions and suggestions have been developed for sustainable urban development in Istanbul.
