Abstract (EN)
19th Century, including the Dissolution Period of the Ottoman Empire, witnessed many concessions made for the foreign states and the minority under the Ottoman Rule during the struggle to prevent the mentioned dissolution. Various motives raised the European curiosity and interest on the Ottoman Land of first the states, then institutions and organizations, and finally that of individuals; and the numerous European travelers who visited the Region with various motives did not refrain from writing the life and cultural and social environment besides their examination and research activities. Western Anatolia also took its share from the mentioned curiosity, and many travelers having written their observations and impressions also shared their experience and lives in the Western Anatolia of the time. In this study, where Western Anatolian life in the 19th century has been consigned to writing from the eye of the European travelers; the travelogues in which the travelers reflected their impressions with their own phrases, were referred to as prior resource materials. The scope of the study hereby has been handled under three main titles and various subtitles dependant thereunto: In the first chapter of the study, the concepts of traveler and travelogue were focused on while travelogues were examined as resources to feed the Western curiosity upon the Ottoman. In the second chapter, biographical data regarding the European travelers who visited the Western Anatolia in the 19th century was presented. In the third and final chapter of this study, the observations and impressions of the European travelers on the 19th century Western Anatolia were presented. The subject was handled under such different titles as Turkish nationals, Western Anatolian life, residences, women, Turkish cuisine, costumes, accommodation, minorities, zeibecks, administration and population upon which travelers had a say in terms of their observations and impressions.
