The assessment of knowledge about family planning, attitude and behaviour of peopl, attending to aydin maternity hospital family planning department and family planning counselling service

ABSTRACTBACKGROUND AND AİM: Family planning is an important aspect of basic health care system. Insufficient use of contraceptive methods cause a lot of problems both in social and health related areas. The aim of this study is to assess people?s point of view on family planning, the contraceptive method preferrences and related factors and to assess the efficiency of counselling and education.METHODS: This study was carried out between 1 st of September 2007 and 30 th of November 2007 in the State Maternity Hospital family planning clinic of Aydın on 141 woman who attended for counselling on contraceptive methods and freeware. Information about family planning methods were given. A questionnaire was filled out by face to face interviewing method before and after counselling. Chi square, fisher?s exact t test, lineer regression and one way analysis of varience (ANOVA) tests were used for statistical analysis.RESULTS: 112 (79,4%) of participants were using a contraceptive method , whereas 29 (20,6%) were not using any method. 81?i (%57,4) of participants were using a modern contraceptive method and 60 (42,6%) of participants were using traditional methods for contraception. The most commonly used methods were IUD, coitus interruptus and preservative respectively. It was detected that counselling increased number of participants using family planning method.CONCLUSİON: The most important factor for providing frequent and appropriate usage of contraceptive methods is counselling on this subject done by well educated, authorized health care providers. Family planning counselling service would support proper usage of health care system, feeling confident and being correctly informed about methods for admitted women and correct application of suggested method .Anahtar kelimeler: Family planning, method use, counselling
