Language situation in Azerbaijan in the nationalization an analysis on the basis of Azadlıq, Yeni Azərbaycan ve Azərbaycan newspaper (1989-2003)

This study aims to analyze the language planning activities implemented in Azerbaijan between 1989-2003 on the basis of Azǝrbaycan, Yeni Azǝrbaycan and Azadlıq newspapers. Qualitative research methods and techniques were utilized in the study. The data obtained through archive searches were analyzed deductively based on the Classical Approach and Haugen's model in this approach. The study consists of two parts. In the first chapter, the conceptual and theoretical framework of the thesis is determined. Some concepts related to language planning, relationships between concepts, definition of language planning, language planning approaches and the language planning model based on the thesis are discussed. The second part is the main part of the thesis. In the selection title, which is the first stage of the language planning process, the language name issue, which caused long-lasting debates in this process in Azerbaijan and language, dialect/variety selection were examined. In the codification phase following the selection, alphabet issues and orthography- orthoepy issues were discussed in the context of graphization process, and in the continuation of graphization process, grammatication and lexication studies were emphasized. Then, in the implementation phase, how the language is implemented in the official and social domain; it is explained in the context of school domain, public linguistic space, goverment agencies, and religious domain. In the elaboration process, which is the last stage of language planning, stylistic development and terminological modernization activities were evaluated. In addition, studies and discussions on the common Turkish written language and common Turkish alphabet, including the selection, codification and implementation processes; it was analyzed under a separate heading in the light of our data. As a result of the study, the data obtained from Azǝrbaycan, Yeni Azǝrbaycan and Azadlıq newspapers showed that the language planning activities in Azerbaijan in the post-USSR period increased the prestige and role of Azerbaijani Turkish, and it was determined that this process continued for 2003. Azerbaijan, which has a multi-ethnic structure, has adopted a policy of monolingualism; however, it has been observed that it follows a moderate policy in this regard and in accordance with international recommendations.
